What are UVC rays?
Ultraviolet (UV) is an energy that is found in the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically between X-rays and light visible to the naked eye. Although UV rays are not perceptible to the human eye, we are exposed to them every day through the sun’s rays, which are composed of UV light and are responsible for our sunburns. UV rays can be categorized into three categories: UVA, UVB and UVC.
The latter, although very effective, are the most energetic and harmful UVs of the three. It is therefore necessary to take precautions and to use products specifically designed for the use of UVC radiation.

What is the UVC disinfection method?
The germicide ultraviolet radiation (UVC) is the method of disinfection used by PuriTechs. It kills or inactivates microorganisms by destroying their nucleic acids, which alters their DNA and RNA. As a result, they are unable to be harmful and reproduce. The germicide ultraviolet radiation can be used in a multitude of applications, such as food, air or water.

In fact, several studies have shown the effectiveness of decontamination through germicide ultraviolet radiation H1N1, as well as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that introduces Covid-19 to the medical community (1,2). How does the UVC disinfection method work?
The disinfection of air or surfaces is done by the use of germicidal lamps that will diffuse UVC with a wavelength of 254 nanometers. When a microorganism is exposed to UVC, the cell nucleus is modified under the effect of the photolytic process, which will prevent cell division and therefore, reproduction.

- The duration of exposure of a microorganism;
- The intensity of exposure to UVC radiation;
- The wavelength of UVC radiationused.
It is also necessary to take into account the presence of potential particles that can protect microorganisms from UV or the ability of a microorganism to resist UVC.
For some bacteria, the dose ofUVC used will not immediately cause the cell to be destroyed, but rather to deactivate it. That is, there will still be biological activity, but it will no longer be viable. However, there is the possibility of increasing the efficiency and intensity of UVC using the method of reflection. By using aluminium, the rate of reflection will be all the more important and therefore more effective when using UVC radiation.
